Dr. Hammond conducting the 2nd Movement of Beethoven's 7th Symphony in Russia
Carl Hammond has a distinguished record of conducting, performance and teaching. He is known for his sensivtive approach to the composer's intentions and his pragmatic abilities to get as excellent a performance as possible from a group.
He has learned from a wide variety of teachers including extensive studies under Dr Kurt Frederick, a student of Berg,Webern and Klemperer, Andrew Davis, conductor of Toronto Symphony , Chicago Lyric Opera, and Pittsburgh Symphony and recently with Pyotyr Gribanov and others in Russia
"Obviously, every conductor recognizes the need to effectively communicate through his/her gestures. His gestures shape and express the nuances of a musical line and do it in ways which impel the music forward. Doing this with skill will allow both the audience and musicians to luxuriate in the sensuality of the moment.
Since the training I received under a variety of Russia conductors, my goal of learning how to expressively and unambiguously represent these concepts has matured even further. Strictly through the use of gestures rather than words their world renown techniques have become more and more realized. I have discovered how, only through my movements, both large and very small, a conductor can create closer connections between the musicians and the music. I have learned the psychological benefits to the entire music making process by being inviting rather than demanding, coaxing rather than coercing. These differing gestures often promote a galvanization of the music and the musicians and greatly improve the quality of the musical result."
His knowledge of conducting and rehearsal technique are second to none.He has the unique ability to convey complex musical concepts in simple terms and the musicians responded warmly to his direction.
